Justin saw the recently posted walrus tattoo and it inspired him to send his own “I AM THE WALRUS” tattoo. His was done in a classic computer Beatles font by Stano at Tattoo Zone by Stano in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Yeah, I really hope that Natalie gets kicked off BB9 tonight. But anyway…

The script in this tattoo by Brian at Atomic Age in Mechanicsburgh, PA, reads “This I Know”, like the song, explains the wearer…

I was on a plane leaving the French West Indies after a month-long cross cultural college course. We were headed for Philadelphia, but there was an electrical short in the cockpit when the plane was somewhere over the Bermuda Triangle. The smell of melting plastic and smoke filled the cabin and we thought we were going down for a watery death in the Atlantic. I was terrified with most of the other passengers. One man even wrote up his will a few seats ahead of me.

The college group I was with from Messiah College started singing “Jesus loves me, this i know, for the Bible tells me so.” Hearing that song reaffirmed my faith and brought me a solace I never thought I could feel in a time like that. I told myself that if I lived through the experience, I was going to get that tattooed. That song states such a foundational understanding of my Christianity and because the whole experience tested my faith, I realize how vital my relationship is with my Creator. God brought me through that, and now I have a permanent reminder that I know I am loved.

I’ve heard of plenty of people promising God they’d be good Christians if they survived whatever, but this might be the first time I’ve heard of someone promising God they’d get tattooed if they survived!

Wesley’s “LEMONADE” knuckle tattoos are a great idea as is, but the lemon and glass (although I would have done a lemon and a citrus juicer personally) on his thumbs put it over the top. They were done by Brent at Eternal Body Works in McKinney, Texas.

Fear Not

Tuesday January 15th, 2008 @ 4:01 PM

Filed under: Body Modification, Tattoos, Text

Dear ModBlog,

Jeremy recently had this tattoo done by Dave Wallin at Tattoo Culture in Brooklyn, NY. He explains,

There were several characteristics I wanted for my first real piece. Mostly, I was looking for an interesting way to put text on my skin, specifically the phrase “fear not,” which has been an aspirational motto for me even in my darker hours. I decided to try it in negative space. For the background I came up with leaves as something organic and asymmetrical, and vaguely chaotic. Plus I thought it looked cool. Design-wise, I wanted something flat, with no illusion of depth, and I really wanted no black ink or outlines. I was told that this would result in spreading over time, and I said that was fine with me. If the tattoo decomposes into mulch, so much the better!

I’ll write again soon,

Bach Fan Tattoo

Tuesday January 15th, 2008 @ 11:53 AM

Filed under: Body Modification, Tattoos, Text

Dear ModBlog,

So I discovered recently that sometimes people get music tattoos that aren’t the HIM logo or something Slipknot related! Anji from High Priestess in Eugene, OR sent this one in;

“She’s a musician, she plays classical music, and she loves Bach. So we did an exact copy of his signature on her. The ink is black mixed down with a little brown, so as it heals it will look warm, like olde timey calligraphy ink. I really like this tattoo — sometimes the little stuff is my favorite.”

I agree, and I really like the subtle touch of mixing brown in with the black ink.

Filia Caedus: Daughter Slaughter

Sunday January 13th, 2008 @ 6:04 PM

Filed under: Body Modification, Funny, Tattoos, Text

Dear ModBlog,

Sean sent me this picture of a tattoo he got for the joke band he’s in with his two best friends — “Daughter Slaughter” (which they translate into Latin as “Filia Caedus Caedes”). Anyway, the reason I’m posting it is the photo got me thinking that there are some modifications that force an inherently humorous moment a la the left half of the picture. Guiche piercing is up there as well… Especially for piercers that make their clients get on all fours on the bench.

Feel No Shame When None Is Due

Wednesday January 9th, 2008 @ 8:44 AM

Filed under: Body Modification, Tattoos, Text

Dear ModBlog,

Jef was open enough to share the story behind his brave chestscript,

I was sexually abused as a child. Growing up I knew only shame, for any and all my actions. I did this after a month or so of reflection on a conversation I had with a beautiful dancer I met while doing something I shouldn’t have been. We shared somewhat mutual stories, and as the conversation progressed, she impressed upon me the idea of shameless, a complete anathema to how I’ve lived for years and years. I had decided to get it as a reminder that others — and therefore myself — are able to live life feeling no shame where shame is not due. Every day it serves as a reminder that I am not responsible for what happened to me, and a motivator to continue my healing.

I’ll write again soon,

“Milpool” Tattoo

Wednesday January 9th, 2008 @ 8:40 AM

Filed under: Body Modification, Funny, Tattoos, Text

Dear ModBlog,

Oh my God I love this!!! Meaghan was getting her chestpiece touched up recently, and she was chatting with her artist about things that would be funny tattoos. And, as often happens in these situations, a spur of the moment tattoo ensued…

Being a big Simpsons fan, I mentioned the episode “Bart of Darkness,” where Bart breaks his leg and Milhouse signs his cast “Milpool” and runs off to go swimming. We were both laughing so hard about it that I insisted on getting it tattooed on me there and then. Now, every time I look at it, I crack up.

Definitely one of the more obscure Simpsons tattoos out there… But Caitlin and I — who both got a laugh when this popped up on my screen yesterday — agree; very funny.

Lauren’s Phoenix

Sunday January 6th, 2008 @ 9:22 PM

Filed under: BMEGirls, Body Modification, Tattoos, Text

Dear ModBlog,

So Lauren got her first tattoo and wrote in asking my advice so I’m passing it on to see if anyone has ideas outside of the obvious. She had this phoenix done this most recent New Year’s Eve, after what she describes as “a volatile year” (I can relate!)…

It symbolizes my “rebirth” after a really hard and emotionally unstable time in my life. As well as the phoenix it has the script “i am flawed if i’m not free”, which are lyrics to a Rilo Kiley song. The quote reminds me to always live for myself and not other people, and the tattoo as a whole serves as a reminder that I am strong and don’t need anyone else to make me happy. I can’t wait to add some color! Any ideas?

The outline was done by Will Lollie from Empire Tattoo in Asheville, NC.

Dear ModBlog,

One of the most striking modified people I know is Alice, who has a black sleeve, large scarification work, a mudra rib tattoo, a clamps chestpiece that I’ve featured before — loads of amazing work by artists such as Xed Le Head, Daniel DiMattia, Nicole Parish, Benoit, and Samppa Von Cyborg, but I really do get a kick out her little ankle script in faux-Hindi… look carefully, and you’ll see it reads “I’ll surf this beach” — an Apocalypse Now tattoo!

Home Sweet Home(s)

Friday December 28th, 2007 @ 7:46 AM

Filed under: Body Modification, Tattoos, Text

Dear ModBlog

I think maybe this entry will be of interest mostly to etymology buffs? Niklas (here’s a picture of him and his sister) got this tattoo to show his roots — Swedish one half, Hungarian on the other. The text on the top is Hungarian and the Swedish is on the bottom — the reason I thought it was interesting is that I’ve always identified “Home Sweet Home” as a uniquely American expression, so it’s really a mix of three cultures, one of them unintended?
