One of my favorite books on body ritual, if not my favorite, is Havve Fjell’s brilliant retrospective Ten Years of Pain (click the link for a review). After being unobtainable for too long, Ryan at BMEshop tells me he’s got another shipment of the book in from Norway. It’s not cheap unfortunately, but it’s worth every cent, and the good news is that if you type in the coupon code “Modblog-Loves-Norway” at checkout, it’ll knock $10 off the price. Click the picture to jump to the shop page now.

Continuing this discussion of mainstreaming, I’m in 7/11 this morning and they have a new energy drink called “Inked”. It’s got a faux-tribal border, a “rock” font, and a neo-Japanese wave in the middle, and the flavor is called “Razzle Dazzle” — could there be a more embarrassing name? It’s as if they’re making fun of you for buying it. I’m reminded of the scene in Family Guy where Lois is running for mayor, and realizes that just by saying “9-11″ and “Jesus” and “terrorists” Giuliani-style, all of a suddenly the crowd starts cheering and buys whatever she’s saying… What, are tattoo fans so gullible that they’ll buy an energy drink just because it says “cool razzle dazzle tatties” on it?*

* Yes, I bought it. It tastes like a sort of watered down “Tahiti Treat”.

Maybe it’s the opium talking, but seriously, does anyone else see a face, maybe two, in that Amboyna Burl plug that Paul Debruyn (Paul’s Plugs) made? In any case, if you haven’t already checked it out, visit the custom body jewelry gallery on BME – it’s an excellent place to find small vendors that can make you one-of-a-kind jewelry if you can’t find what you’re looking for at BMEshop or your local studio…

These gorgeous plugs — on the “simpler” end of the designs she’s done — were made by Hermeone of Perishables in Philadelphia, PA.

What with the wonderful new hoody that’s just hit the presses, I don’t know why Ryan is looking so glum!

Dear ModBlog,
This is the last time we will speak in 2007, and I’d like to thank everyone for their help on BME this year. In perfect timing, the new BME stickers arrived this morning (they match the year-end shirts), so those of you placing orders with BMEshop may find these as gifts. Those of you getting the free top contributors shirts and are on the list should already have an email from me about it, but if you don’t, please write me. Oh, and I’d be happy to send stickers out to people hosting BME-related events as well (as soon as I am permitted to moderate events you’ll see lots more there I hope).
Thank you again to everyone who supported BME in 2007 (especially Sacred — seriously, wow!), and click the picture to continue on to the year end awards. ModBlog updates will resume in a few days.
See you in 2008,
- Shannon

Dear ModBlog,
As I mentioned, I was just visiting Santa (mostly hoping he could help me out with my peanut collection — it’s been a little boring around there), and he asked me to pass on some news about BMEshop that was written up in one of the fictional gift-givers trade journals. If you place an order over the holidays, and enter the coupon code “BME-HoHoHo” (at the checkout page, then hit “recalculate”), it will give you 5% off of your order. I believe this code is good from now until the 26th.
Remember, every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings you order from BMEshop, a eunuch loses his nuts.
I’ll write again tomorrow,

But hey, commercialism pays the bills… Better to have BMEshop ads that the insanely stupid (seriously, don’t buy the junk) “tattoo removal” creams and so on that Google keeps insisting on dumping in the tattoo galleries (we actually had a little staff meeting today debating whether we should cancel GoogleAds to avoid these scams, although I’d like to think that BME readers are well enough informed not to be conned by them).
Thanks to Trillance for sending in these shots of Kim and her “Guess Where“ BME shirt (and BME belt buckle), which as a point of trivia has sold more copies than any other single design that we’ve ever done, and has also been consistently in print longer than any other design other than the classic.

Anyway, that’s all for this evening, but like I said, I’ve got plenty more to post over the next couple weeks and will get it all queued up so things keep running in zombie mode while I’m under the knife. There’s also been a zillion images posted to BME, and I’ll have an experience update posted there later tonight as well!

Phil designed these shirts for the suspension school that he’s brought Allen Falkner up from Texas as well as other experts to teach (as far as I know “suspendee” spots are still available — contact Phil for more information). Anyway, because they were white shirts (you can get your Hookspotting shirt here), he’s been tossing everyone he knows with one into a cold shower — starting with Serendipity and Black and Blue (click through for the shirt, or click the usernames to check out the mods you can guess at through the shirts).

As part of “BME week” (or whatever) that surrounds BMEfest at the end of June and start of July are a variety of events, including the Suspension School organized by Philip Barbosa (visit his IAM page for more details, or the event page). The instructors are some of the best — the course is lead by Allen Falkner (suspension.org/TSD) and with backup from Emrys Yetz, Jill Allen, Jon Pett and Jason Shaw.
Anyway, people quite liked the event shirt that Phil designed, so we’ve put it up in BMEshop as a fundraiser as well. You can click through to get it… And the portrait of Robert Carlyle from Trainspotting was done by John Tilt of Body Art Studios in Stafford, UK.

I’ve got a lot of other things I have to do this upcoming week a so I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to do a ton of posting here on ModBlog (but watch the BME/encyclopedia and BME of course). That said, you know I can’t stop myself from posting so who knows…
I did want to again post about ModProm and BMEfest (July 1, 2007). The BBQ during the day is free, but if you’d like to come to the formal evening event (which is really the fun part in my opinion), you can get your ModProm ticket here (and you’ll get the shirt in the mail immediately). Tickets are first-come-first-serve — if you are getting a ticket but can’t do it in the next week or so, please write me! (Note: You do not need to be an IAM/BME member to come).
Click for a closer look at the shirt:

Oh, and since lots of people have asked me if they can get just the shirt, we’ve posted it as a limited edition “sponsor” shirt — click here for only the “Oddrey Hepburn” shirt (this helps support the event too, which is being run at a loss).

Ryan from BMEshop thought it would be good for people to start meeting some of the folks that he works with to bring you great body modification products (it’s more than just BME swag!). To begin, he chatted with Jason Pfohl from Gorilla Glass down in Oaxaca, Mexico. Click the picture to read the interview now.

PS. This is Ryan’s first interview! I think he did a great job…

I don’t normally promote specific BMEshop products here because, well, it’s kind of tacky to blogspam your own swag, but I really like the way these last two shirts turned out. First is a redraw of the old “Dr. BME” logo by me, and we’ve put it on long-sleeves with a please-don’t-sue-us-Red-Cross arm print… As modeled by tcie (and you can click on either of them to go to their BMEshop page):

Next is the BME Aotearoa design, drawn by iam:original_sly (and prepared for printing by Jasonthe29th) to celebrate his local heritage.

Great news, but first a big congratulations to Matt Larkin for the indie release of his first book. For the last few years he’s been shooting the folks from Rites of Passage using ambrotype photography (ie. wet plate, a 19th century technique that’s rare these days). Click on the pictures to jump to BMEshop where it’s available (and visit Matt on IAM if you’d like to see more pictures).
I’m eagerly watching my mailbox for my copy, I’ve been looking forward to this book for a long time now!

Watch for photos from this series in an upcoming book by photographer Antonio Florez. These pictures of Candice were done at the 2006 London Tattoo Convention — that reminds me, if you’re interested in an interview with Candice there’s one in the new issue of Tattoo&Piercing (and she’s on the cover).

What better shirt design to post about on a sunny summer day than the Happy Sun. Did I mention it is being modelled by our friend Erica [note from Shannon: you may remember a while back I posted her My Little Pony sleeve] and is available now at BMEshop?

Our friend Lara knows more about cosmeticsthan almost anyone Iknow. Always on the lookout for something to entertainthe masses, she sent me this link to Hardy LipsLip Plumper.
The Lip Plumper seems to be one of the clear glosses with magicalingredients that create a beestung look to one’s lips. At $24.95a pop, it might seem a bit expensive, but it’s far cheaper thanpermanent cosmetics. Furthermore, the art on the container islovely. (If someone would like to buy me a tube, I’ll post Beforeand After pictures of my lips. I promise.)
Expect from me some Modblogs to help with your holidayshopping. This is definitely an item I’d suggest for a lady who likes themostly-natural look and who appreciates good packaging.

I come across all kinds of articles every day, and just came across a press release for Nicole Yost’s Asta Arts Kick Ass Rubber Stamps.
While we on IAM are a creative lot (along with scarification, piercing, and tattoo artists, we have our fair share of photographers, knitters, scrapbookers, and other crafters), I couldn’t find any forums for rubber stamping. Maybe it’s because there weren’t any cool stamps before?
The inspiration for the retro-cool stamps came to Yost during a late-night crafting session. “I was making a stack of hand-stamped cards and I just thought, ‘Why doesn’t anyone make any cool rubber stamps?’ I knew exactly what I wanted, but no one was selling anything like that.” Eventually, Yost drew up the designs herself and her company, Asta Arts, was born.
The prices, starting at $4.99 for a small nautical star and going up to $14.99 for an intricate dragon seem reasonable to me, as compared to what I see in the local craft store. I don’t have these in my hands so I don’t know the actual quality, but the lines look like they’d be great for decorating a scrapbook, laying out the bare basics of a tattoo design plan, or stamping your little sister to convince your mom that you’ve corrupted her, too.
Administrative ModBlog note: For LiveJournal users, thanks to the
BME IAM community there, a feed has been added so you can add this blog to your friends list. Just click the “LJ” link in the title bar on the
main page. Thanks!

A lot of the modified women (and some of the modified men) you’llmeeton IAM appreciate the art — and luxury — of a good manicure andpedicure. In searching for rhinestones, *chel* (my hero!) has surpassed my searchingskillsand I bow to her, albeit begrudgingly.
I also want the cherry onesfor my tattoo artist’s wife… It’s time for me to send some chocolate to Dita of BMEJapan, and see if she can’thelp me place an order!
