You may be surprised that this is not the first goldfish I’ve seen with a pierced labret (click that for an interview on the subject). This one is “Hydro” the “shop fish” at Twisted in Oak Harbor, Washington…

We’ve seen lots and lots of examples of people getting their kids drawings tattooed on them, or even getting their kids to tattoo them, but I think this is the first time I’ve seen a kid’s drawing done with scarification. Trash at Kamikazes in Guadalajara, Mexico did this scar based on a drawing that his son created.

Din was walking down the street in the Kineret of Israel and picked up this random chick he found in the middle of the road. (Piercings by George at Kipod in Tel Aviv).

One of the reasons that ear scalpeling first started getting done, is that when someone has their lobes pierced as a baby, it can grow up to be sitting quite low on the lobe both because it’s harder to do perfect placement on a tiny lobe and because the ear changes a little as it grows. As well as the issue of placement, there’s also the issue of consent — is it morally acceptable to modify someone else’s body without their permission, be it circumcision, piercing baby ears, or even coming of age tattooing and ritual ceremonies?
Then there’s also the counter-concern that many professionals face of “well, if I don’t do it, they’ll just go to the mall and have it done badly”… Personally I fall on the “don’t do it” side of the fence, but I can definitely understand why someone would come to the other conclusion. For example, Karla “Pinky” Grimes at No Regrets in Champaign, IL pierced the five week old baby on the left, and the little fellow on the right was done by Tarzan at Edu Tattoo Studio in Rio de Janeiro.

Continuing in the trend of many very young tattoo artists, let me introduce you to Xavier, Aaron Prosser’s three year old son doing his very first tattoo on his dad at Whitsunday Tattooing in Airlie Beach, Australia. I know, as always there will be a variety of naysayers about this, but I think it’s charming, and something that they’ll both value for life.

When she was a child, The Darthside knew she didn’t want to have children. At nineteen, she decided to get sterilized, and seven years later had the procedure done by a surgeon in Germany. The procedure had been done endoscopically, leaving her with no scars, which bothered her, so she had Muffe at Copenhagen Body Extremes in Denmark giver her three cuts, intended to look like a large scratch.
A while later, after reading the various animal modification posts, she realized that her cats and her have sort of matching scars, all stemming from sterilization…

You may remember that in the past I posted a pregnant Bree (iam:Wandering_Star). She’s since had her baby, and is back to getting tattooed by Ben of Slave to the Needle in Seattle, nursing baby in tow. If you’re wondering, no, tattooing and nursing is not like nursing and eating spicy food — it has no effect on the child.
Note: Just to be clear, this was done privately and off-shift — nursing babies on mothers getting tattooed are not within shop norms at STTN!

So yesterday afternoon I was walking through the forest in High Park, and I noticed a big brown rabbit in front of me. It was almost tame — it slowly hopped away from me, never straying more than fifteen feet or so in distance. I followed it for about ten minutes, wondering whether there was something wrong with it for being so docile, whether it was someone’s pet that had been released, or maybe, just maybe, it was a magical rabbit, here to lead me away from all my troubles.
Perhaps it was just a sign that I should post Sara’s picture of her and her bunny, with a Medusa piercing done by Clint at Artistic Skin Design in South Indianapolis?

Oh yeah, and I can’t stand the admin side of WordPress 2.5 so far. Bleh!

I’ve seen so many kids tattooing their friends and family, either directly, or even just having their drawings applied that I almost think I need to dedicate a section to it. Brett and Mike went on weekend trip, and Brett got a tattoo from a diminutive source… He writes,
“My friends Bob and Joy Roughton were at the show — I used to work with Bob down in Newport Beach and in Pico Rivera for a while. I was at their wedding, and have known their son Kai since his birth. I knew Kai had tattooed his name on Bob about two years ago, but when I got to the show on Friday I found out he was preparing to tattoo his uncle Al. I joked around with him about what his hourly rate was and all that stuff, and was really impressed with his maturity. I started honestly considering getting tattooed by him. Of my friends that I’ve made since being in California, the Roughtons/Garcias have been a few of the dearest. We don’t see each other often because they moved up to Oregon, but I would definitely put them on my list of trustworthy family. I just didn’t have a clue what I would get tattooed by Kai if I did let him do it.
As the weekend progressed I met some nice folks from Hayward, CA that work at a shop called Black Wing. They were all a lot of fun to hang out with, and for a while our whole booth took turns playing with their children Lili and Jens. They had a big bag of prehistoric animals and I kept thinking about how the sabertooth cats actually resembled a werewolf head I used to draw as a small child. By the end of the weekend I decided that was the image Kai would tattoo. It was a lot of fun, and his parents did as much as they could to not stifle Kai’s natural ability. That is of course a very kind way of saying my tattoo is extremely shaky and looks like a character from the squiggle-vision cartoon Dr. Katz. But come on people, do you think I expected a six year old to tattoo clean lines with a machine that weighs almost as much as him? Hahaha. I had Kai sign the piece and paid him for his work — I had found out that back home someone broke into their car and stole his video games, and thought maybe this would help replace one or two. Lots of people got video and photos and I entered the piece in Tattoo of the Day context just so Kai could get a little recognition and feel special. He’s a really awesome kid — so much so that the promoters made a special ‘Best tattoo by an artist under twelve’ category which of course he won, being the only one present that fit the criteria.”
I like Mike’s facial stripe as well!

When I was a kid, most of the animals we owned had ear piercings, and it never seemed to bother them — we gave the cows ear tags which were IDs, but more so insecticides, so they were quite likely better off for them. I also remember branding the horn buds off our goat kids — which they definitely did not like, but were also likely better off for having it done.
That said, I’m not so convinced that this rat is better off with his body modification and I’m actually surprised it didn’t bother him. However, the rat’s keeper writes, “it healed quickly and with the tiny jewelery I put in it, he didn’t even notice he had it.”
On one hand, I think we live in a culture of pervasive animal cruelty, be it the simple reality of killing and eating animals, or the even more perverse reality of professing to love animals, keeping one as a slave while having others killed to feed that slave, so I’m not convinced on the scale of things little Dawson the pierced rat is the biggest problem for real animal lovers. On the other hand, I can predict the response to this post already…

So I was at the grocery store and my daughter and I were looking at all the various bits of animals they had — pig’s feet, pig’s tails, and then, when we picked up a pig’s ear, I saw it had been tattooed… Anyway, tomorrow is a busy day so I’m not sure exactly when I’ll be able to squeeze in posts, but I’ve got some great stuff lined up, and the other good news is that later this week we’ll be posting a full interview with Zombie (aka Skullboy)!

On the other hand, in relation to the previous entry, as this puppyriffic picture of Uranium Hobo sums up quite effectively, I have absolutely no fear of Colorado Springs.

In truth, this was done by a vet for ID purposes, but Yoshi is very proud of it and thinks it makes him look tough. All the other cats are scared of him now because he told them he got it in the pound, and they think he’s probably on catnip again.

I hope people have a little more sense about this post than the analogous entry about the six-year old tattoo artist. Personally I agree that having your child’s artwork permanently made a part of your life is a wonderful way to hold onto a timeperiod that’s all too fleeting… And maybe will help you deal with them when they’re miserable teenagers, ha!

Anyway, Spiderlilly’s daughter gave her a little self-portrait tattoo for her birthday, with some help from the folks at Suffer City Tattoo in Dallas, Texas. Too cute!
