Dulong Tribal Facial Tattoos

Monday March 31st, 2008 @ 12:00 PM

My old friend Damien, who started tattoos.com back at about the same time as BME, also from here in Toronto, went to China last fall for the Beijing Convention (he’s currently organizing NIX again for Toronto, and working on a convention in South Africa for next January). He took these pictures of facial tattoos on Dulong tribal women while he was there

dulong-facial-tattoos-1.jpg

Dulong facial tattooing died out in the 50s after China took over the region, and these days there are perhaps fifty people that still wear the tattoos, which were done as a coming of age rite. The designs vary from clan to clan, but their meaning has been largely lost to history. Continue after the break for more pictures by Damien.

LTD Crew Cliff Suspension

Monday March 31st, 2008 @ 11:18 AM

Filed under: BMEBoys, Quality, Ritual, Suspension

Ron Garza, John Durante, and Chris Glunt have been exploring the world, and recently found themselves at San Marcos on Lake Atitaln in Guatemala — $10 a night accommodations — and after doing some 50ft cliff dives, already high on adrenaline, Chris suspended with two 6ga hooks and rigging tied to a boulder. Looks like an amazing experience — continue reading for more photos, and add their pages to your reading list to follow their adventures of course.

“Voila! I’m dead”

Saturday March 29th, 2008 @ 7:16 AM

This bloody bathroom-wrecker explains that this photoshoot was done in order to obtain some reference photos for a zombie rib tattoo she’s having Mike Storey from Blackline Studios here in Toronto do for her. It’s a mix of red and green food colouring, water, and corn syrup, not real blood (unlike most entries). A couple more pictures continue after the break.

Finger Scissors

Dan’s little inner finger tattoo of a pair of scissors (“I just really like scissors, it’s that simple”) really healed exceptionally well I think given the tough location. It was done by Gavi Snider at Sacred Art Tattoo in Corvallis, Oregon.

Earlobes Be Gone!

As you can see in the before-and-after below, like so many people these days (seriously, I see so many people removing their stretched earlobes every day now), Pen Di’Panda decided he’d had enough. A couple more somewhat disconcerting photos of his taking a pair of scissors to his lobes continue after the break!

Ten Years of Pain - Coupon

Friday March 28th, 2008 @ 1:50 PM

One of my favorite books on body ritual, if not my favorite, is Havve Fjell’s brilliant retrospective Ten Years of Pain (click the link for a review). After being unobtainable for too long, Ryan at BMEshop tells me he’s got another shipment of the book in from Norway. It’s not cheap unfortunately, but it’s worth every cent, and the good news is that if you type in the coupon code “Modblog-Loves-Norway” at checkout, it’ll knock $10 off the price. Click the picture to jump to the shop page now.

I did this tattoo on a friend for his school project. It was a story on why not to let a person that does not know how to tattoo do any work on you. I’m not an artist — obviously — but it’s a good long lasting laugh.

Camping Trip Gone Wrong

…or gone very right, depending on your goals.

A while back someone sent me a link to a site that purports to be about on-purpose infestation of pubic lice, which I was reminded of when I got this “mosquito attack” photoshoot, which I figure is in the same arena, related to play piercing, suspension, and other games that use your body’s nervous system in atypical ways to achieve pleasure of one sort or another. Continue reading if you dare.

Views of Israel

Friday March 28th, 2008 @ 1:49 PM

Filed under: BMEBoys, BMEGirls, Body Piercing, Tattoos

I was reading about the bizarre anti-emo riots in Mexico, as well as Sophie Lancaster who was killed for being goth, and was thinking about how strange it is for people who in theory should be on the same side attacking each other. Although I suppose that’s always been one of the ways how the upper class stays in power — by tricking everyone else into fighting with each other. Anyway, I don’t know why all that really made me think of juxtaposing these two photos, but Yael writes of the photos below (including her boyfriend Nuke), that “While some people think that Israel is a desert where people have camels instead of cars, I have some pictures to prove them wrong.”

israel-1.jpg

On the other end of the Israeli social spectrum, Hasson sent in his “Wicked” tattoo — perhaps I am wrong, but I’m guessing he’s more into kicking ass than picking flowers.
