My old friend Olivia (who you may know as IAM:Athena) is currently traveling in Tanzania and spent the weekend with the Maasai. She’s been documenting her trip at oliviaminer.blogspot.com — check it out:
While I was taking a picture of my mom receiving the bracelet a young girl, maybe 10 years old, touched the tattoo on my ear. As she did, she noticed my earring and got a very curious look on her face. She flipped it around and saw that I did, indeed, have a large hole in my earlobe. I smiled at her and took my earring out, and she squealed! She yelled at the others and they all turned toward me, amazed. I took out my other earring and everyone started chattering loudly. John explained to them that I had been fascinated with Maasai culture since childhood, and that meeting them was a very special occasion for me. Mama Paolos daughter, whose name I didnt catch, lifted her hands up as if to say WAIT! and ran into the house.
She emerged moments later with earrings for me, and slipped them onto my ears. The women clapped, the men laughed and smiled, the children all watched in amazement. I think right then and there I floated up off the earth. The women said I was now a mzungu Maasai, or white Maasai. I dont think Ive made it back onto solid ground yet. As I write this Im still blown away by what an incredible day it was.

Check out this neat photo from Christine at Utility Company in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada). I don’t know the story behind the photo, but I really love the mix of traditional tattoos, traditional piercings, and modern piercings on top of that.

Since before the Beatles declared themselves bigger than Jesus, pop culture had already won the recognition battle over religion. So it’s no surprise that every time I see a tattoo of the famous stigmatic Padre Pio all I can think of is Obi Wan Kenobi circa 1977 a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. This example is by Jonattan “Pipeño” Torres at Extima in Copiapó, Chile.

Here you go:

The leftmost tattoo (“Hug O’ War …everyone wins”) makes me angry it’s so sickly sweet. Honestly, I’m not a violent guy in the least, but over-the-top cuteness has the opposite effect on me. Probably just more evidence to add to the growing pile that I am somewhat psychologically imbalanced? Tatoo by Ryan Zachary in Portland, OR (don’t blame him — it’s based on a Shel Silverstein drawing).
In the middle? I have no idea. Maybe someone reading this can post and say what it is… The tattoo itself is done by Danny at Jersey Devil at Blackhorse Pike, Blackwood, South Jersey.
And the vegan tattoo on the right (from the clothing catalog and magazine Herbivore) — “Praise Seitan” — was done at BodyTech in Gainesville, Florida. Anyway, since I recently mentioned a “miso tattoo” and was greeted with a “WTF IS MISO” response, here’s some info on what seitan is.

Dude, your ass is the bomb!
Tattoos above by Adam at Factory Ink in Kutztown, PA. This next one (which I think my three year old would really like, seeing as she’s currently asleep with a few Care Bears) is by Josh at Skin Lab in Tempe, AZ (c/o Plaid, who is pictured with his evil sidekick Candy).

c/o xPurifiedx (B-Lo Hooks, Buffalo NY) — I don’t know if I’m more disturbed by the painting in the background, or the growing bulge… Hope the suspendee doesn’t decided to swing backward too hard.

Thanks to my friend B-Boy (who has sent many wonderful things over the years) for sending in these pictures from Thailand’s first (annual?) tattoo convention (see also: Sao Paulo tattoo convention photos). On the whole tattooing is remarkable similar all around the world, but still I always like seeing the subtle differences in style and interpretation in different cultures.
These and more (BME has multiple members in Thailand that were photographing that convention) will be in the next update of BME, which is currently sitting at a massive 5,000+ images. However, as I’m sure you’ve noticed, this server is having mega problems right now. A replacement is set to arrive next week, but I’m afraid something is going to crash before then so we’re working to get stuff moved. I’m very sorry to the people who are patiently waiting for updates, memberships, and so on… We are working on it.
PS. If BME goes offline for any extended periods, you can checking zentastic.com (or IAM) for more information. That’s on a different server and I’ll use it to post if I need to.

Mostly I just thought these were really funny pictures if you took them out of context, primarily due to his (and I guess her) facial expression… It looks like good pain he’s feeling, not bad pain! Thanks to Nico for sending them (and click here to see what’s really going on).

And if you thought the Alf tattoos on BME were an amusing pop culture reference… check out the start of Goddam’s MASH sleeve by Dominick McIntosh at Edge Tattoo in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

I really love this… It’s Jermboaw’s very first tattoo, which he got on his eighteen birthday. What makes it so special is that his twin brother has “2 of 2″ tattooed on him…

The question is, did I like the photo (I think I did), or am I such an unhealthy deviant that I only think I like it because it contains nudity? You be the judge (of the photo, not of me).

I was going to write a caption about how this seems like an unusual position to tattoo from but that it was somehow justified by poor vision, but then I decided the joke wasn’t terribly funny. So just enjoy it without a caption… More explicit photos are in BME/HARD by the way (or will be on the next update).

Mostly the juxtaposition between the pretty vinework and the gansta theme cracked me up. I have a few more tattoos by the multi-talented Ryan Zachary in Portland, OR to post over the next few days (both here and on BME), but let me start with “THUG LIFE” Jana’s tattoo:
